I am working on an essay about how P.E.T.A. and many animal rights groups can harm sustainable practices.  My examples will be how micro farms use animal manure and animal protein to support an integrated environment. Yesterday (while doing research) I stumbled on an article that I wanted to post now. What would I want to be able to share as my first post? A lawsuit.  HSUS is being sued on RICO charges.

07/26/2012 "Tables turned on Humane Society" from the "San Bernardino Sun" written by Jim Matthews  Posted: 07/26/2012
"The Humane Society of the United States, an organization that does next to nothing for animal shelters but sues, badgers and lobbies politicians and businesses into adopting its radical animals rights agenda, is getting a taste of its own medicine.
In a little-reported ruling by a judge in the District of Columbia earlier this month, the HSUS is facing allegations under RICO statues on racketeering, obstruction of justice, malicious prosecution and other claims for a lawsuit it brought and lost against Ringling Brothers Circus' parent company Feld Entertainment, Inc."... full story

then there is this
Feld Entertainment's Federal Racketeering Case to Proceed Against ASPCA, HSUS and other Animal Rights Groups and their Lawyers

"In today's decision, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan recognized that Feld Entertainment had sufficient allegations to proceed with claims that the victims of the defendants' RICO violations were not only Feld Entertainment, but also members of the public who may have been improperly induced to make donations to the animal rights organizations based on the manufactured lawsuit."

A preview of my next post:
How the Localvore movement and animal Rescues are butting heads.
These are references that I plan to use for my next post. I will leave them here, so that you can see what HSUS and Peta have been supporting. This is from TheDogPlace - February 2010 article "2010 estimates for dogs imported exceed $40,000,000 " and these links Oct. 24, 2007  "300,000 Imported Puppies Prompt Rabies Concerns" and March 19, 2011 "It's Raining Dogs.....from Other Countries" show what can happen. The links that I have show that some states have done so well in their spay/neuter programs that there is an waiting list to adopt animals.  People can be so desperate for an animals that they are willing to adopt (as pets, traditional livestock / feed) animals like guinea pigs, rabbits and rats. Research into microfarms and sustainable farming shows that these animals, have the potential of being a crucial part of the farm. By the propaganda that  HSUS,  PETA and some rescues have distributed, these people / farms would be classified as 'animal mills' . For those that want to eat a natural diet, feed a natural diet to their dogs or use the manure to help their plants, they define the keeping of these animals as livestock that helps their farm be sustainable.

"This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to."

The Highest Priced Working Dog record was broken with Matthew Johnsons' dog 'Tom' who sold for $12,000 with the winning buyer Paul Weeding from Tasmania. Tom is a 2yo Male Red Kelpie with bloodlines of Elfinvale - Washpool. This price is $3,000 on top of last year's record. "

"Six Massachusetts residents had to receive rabies treatments because a shelter imported a rabid puppy from Puerto Rico. The puppy was too young to have his rabies vaccinations completed, but shelters need puppies to satisfy their customers."

"But Pyrethrum has a synthetic cousin: Pyrethroid. And it’s made in a lab. One cup of this stuff could wipe out all the aquatic life in an entire river.
Here in the U.S. efforts are being made to control pests with clean forage, rotating pasture and trapping insects. But this isn’t the case in other countries. Australia worries that the international market drop for its wool is directly related to fleece containing pesticide residue that, when processed, sends chemicals up the food chain."

[http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=3765973&page=1#.UB4tnZTm7m4] "According to the World Health Organization, rabies is still common in much of Latin America, Eastern Europe, India and other parts of Asia -- regions where puppies are raised for commercial resale in the United States." "Even though dog overpopulation is rampant in some states, particularly in the South, successful spaying and neutering programs in the Northwest, California and the Northeast have created a dearth of adoptable puppies, say local shelters."

*June 10, 2006  More animal shelters trade responsible conduct for media limelight by importing foreign strays for adoption
http://www.naiatrust.org/resources/foreign_strays.htm ]
Patti Strand, National Director, June 10, 2006
"It is not conspiratorial to note that in many of the areas where dog importation is commonplace, shelter personnel were leaders in pushing anti-breeder legislation. At the same time, they marketed the unsubstantiated claim that breeders displace shelter dogs with their placements, while shelter adoptions save a life. And throughout the process, many shelters began changing their mission in fundamental ways. Today many of these shelters treat dogs and cats as commodities. For example, some no kill shelters refuse to accept any but the most adoptable animals while they import dogs from distant lands to create headlines and a steady supply of dogs that can be adopted quickly with little expense to the shelter. What is the difference between these operations and pet stores? The differences lie in their ability to wrap themselves in humane rhetoric and purpose, and their ability to avoid regulations and laws that pet stores and private breeders must obey. "

It's A Dogs Life For Travelling Potcake Puppies
http://www.bahamasb2b.com/news/wmview.php?ArtID=3517 ]
"Thirty potcake puppies that took a ferry from Freeport to Port Everglades, Florida are being offered for adoption by the Broward Humane Society.
Already home to thousands of unwanted pets, Broward County received the special delivery from the Bahamas under an arrangement with the Grand Bahama Humane Society.""Shipped Renee Slone, who manages Freeport's Grand Bahama Humane Society, made the two-hour journey in the ferry with the 30 puppies and one older dog being shipped to a family in Denver.
Shelter officials are confident they can quickly find the dogs homes because they are frisky young puppies, as opposed to the older dogs that normally wind up in shelters unclaimed.
"Puppies don't usually last a long time in our kennels," Chris Mitchell, clinic manager at the facility located west of Interstate 95 on Griffin Road, told the Herald. "People will take them."
The dogs were originally to be sent to a Tampa Humane Society shelter, but that facility could not take them after a law enforcement raid filled its kennels.""There are an estimated 11,000 stray dogs in the Bahamas, according to the latest statistics available.
Of the estiamted 73,000 owned dogs in the Bahamas, it is believed that more than 12,000 owners failed to confine 29,000 dogs."

More cities importing pound puppies
By Tom Vanden Brook, USA TODAY
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2003-01-30-dogs-usat_x.htm
"Peluso is part of a trend: Animal shelters in the USA are casting a wide net — from Puerto Rico to as far as Taiwan — to fill kennels. Critics say many shelters have solved the stray problem in their own area — but rather than shut down, they become de facto pet stores. Some charge more than $200 per adoption for imported dogs."
"Not-for-profit shelters may be chartered to insure animal welfare, but they are relatively unregulated, Patronek says. Pet shops, on the other hand, generally operate under more stringent state and local regulations.
Bilton makes no bones about it: Shelters are on a tack to compete against pet stores for the business of dog lovers. Adoption of a sato at Bilton's shelter costs $125, which includes spaying or neutering."
"We don't feel bad if we can put a pet store out of business," she says. "Pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills where conditions are horrendous. I don't feel guilty at all about putting puppy mills out of business either."
"So far, the importation of disease has not been a problem, even though dogs are arriving from places as diverse as Mexico, Bahamas and Taiwan, says Martha Armstrong, vice president for companion animals at the Humane Society of the United States. "Many of the people who are exporting are taking care of what they're sending out," she says."
